Being a parent is the most difficult job in the world. I am a parent. I am also a family therapist who has counseled parents for over twenty years. I realize the significance and responsibility of parenting. When taken seriously, the role of parenting takes more energy and commitment than anything else I can think of. Being concerned about our children, we are always on the look out for any problems that our children may have. We want to find the balance between seeing every issue as a problem, versus ignoring or denying the danger signals, in the hope that the youngster will "grow out of it." Children do go through developmental phases that have the potential of increasing stress for parents, and it is normal to seek support during these periods. However, sometimes there is something else occurring and it may be putting them at risk for more serious consequences.

My child seems to be obsessed/addicted to their cell phone/video games/myspace (or other online website)… is this just a phase?
Certain qualities, like shyness or lack of motivation, seem to be limiting my child’s success and affecting his/her self-esteem.
